Even if you are own your boss, you still have to take care of a lot of things and a lot of people as well. As a design business man, you are no longer handling the responsibility of designing and will be wearing multiple hats. Initially, you will be handling almost every department on your own. The Company, the Audience and the Competition

While designing a poster, the most important element to be considered is the message. The designer should understand the only reason of putting up a poster is to convey the message ahead. Constitute the message of your poster by considering three things, the attributed of the company or the client who is sending the message, the targeted audience to whom the message is being conveyed and the competitors from which one has to create a differentiation in the message. So, in order to ensure an effective communication, it is necessary to take account of the giver and the receiver of this message.

Originality and Differentiation

Like every other communication tool, posters are mean to be original and creative so that the message being conveyed hits the target audience well and stays in their minds for a longer period of time. Also, originality automatically leads to differentiation as there are millions of posters being made in the world on daily basis. So in order to create differentiation and effective communication, develop creativity in the message being conveyed through the poster. The conceptual idea and the poster aesthetic should be unique and recognizable among the visual pollution. Only then it will create a re-call among the masses.

Compatibility between Message and Aesthetics

Aesthetics of the poster matter a lot, as the contact of the target audience is very limited with the message. Develop Information Hierarchies

When it comes to designing a poster, placing right information the right way is very important. The information on the poster should be in the ‘inverted pyramid’ model i.e. starting with most important information and go down to lesser important details. Information overload is not at all advised as it will spoil the message, confuse the reader and leave a blank-mined viewer.

A posters should be designed with different information hierarchies and the reading levels should be well defined in the space available, in order to accomplish the proper communication of a message. Otherwise, the very element you want to highlight in the poster will not stand out from the others.

The Emotional Element

Among all the appeals used in advertising to attract the audience, emotional appeal has its greater impact. So, in order to cash the limited time of viewer and put your message through, your poster design should have at least some emotional element in it. The emotional impact it will have on the different individuals is an important element to motivate a call-to-action. However, one should be very careful in putting an emotional element in the poster’s design so that it does not prove to be counter-productive. Also, remember that different emotional elements appeal different segments of market. There are several parts of a poster design which, when put together in a proper composition create a joint impact. These elements are text, image, layout, color and miscellany. Here I would like to give you a few tips on poster designing that is specific to its deployment locations, so that when you design your next poster, it becomes easy for you to adapt your poster design in any area you want and make them a success.

For High Traffic Areas

When you are designing a poster to be deployed at high traffic areas, it is best to be as attractive and noticeable as possible. Basically, in high traffic areas, your poster is competing with the reader’s attention and that’s why it is always good to have large sized and full color posters when you are targeting these high traffic locations. The bigger and more colorful they are, the better your impact and presence will be. So for designing a poster for high traffic areas, make sure that you adjust the size as well as make the design as impressive as possible.

For In-Store Branding

While designing a poster for in-store windows and walls, the general rule is to have a decorative, appealing design and it should be in line with the current theme of the store. For designing posters which are aimed to be deployed at public gathering places, you will need a combination of important design elements for your posters to be effective. For instance, placing a poster at spots stadium, performance hall or public parks require larger and more readable fonts, simpler text, attractive graphics and a highly colorful layout. Simplicity in design is also one thing to remember while designing posters for public places.

A calendar is one of the most important promotional materials that helps deliver business communication all year long. In fact, calendars are more than just a promotional item. Calendar offers as a useful free gift to current and prospective clients and friends alike and also keeps your company at the top of their mind for the whole year. However, the challenge for calendar designers is to conceptualize and design their calendar in such a way that it retains the onlooker’s interest in each page for a longer time and to develop the viewer’s interest in your business. Such is called a call-to-action calendar.

So if you have got an assignment of calendar designing, or planning to design your own company’s calendar to promote your business; keep the following tips in mind in order to design a better calendar for the year 2011.

The Tips

Number of Months per Page

Calendars are of different types, depending upon the number of months per page. Mostly, businesses and organizations prefer 1-month-a-page type of calendar. This enables them to put their message across properly and the message, along with the visual keeps changing every month.

Although, this type of calendar may get expensive, however, it is better to opt for this one and suggest your client on the same. There are other options for calendars too including, 2 months a page, 4 months a page, 6 months a page and even 12 month (the whole year a page). Whichever calendar type you want to adopt, your aim should be to make it as appealing as possible.

Conceptualize a Theme

Every winning communication material requires a rationale, concept or theme behind it. Same goes for the calendar designing. You need to think about certain themes or concepts for the calendar and get one approved from the client (or yourself – in case of your own calendar).

This theme may be in accordance with the general corporate theme of the client company or any other interesting concept that may appeal the target audience of the calendar. I, for instance, gave some concepts for a bank’s calendar that included environment, culture, and music (as indirect themes) and history of money and the bank’s corporate history (as direct themes).

Decide Upon a Message

The concept of theme, about which I have mentioned above, needs to be accompanied, rather strengthened with the help of a message. Once the theme is decided, brainstorm the overall message you want to communicate in your calendar about your client’s product, service, industry or cause.

For example, the theme on environment should have statistical messages on extinct animals and plants or about every conservation etc. Likewise, for cultural theme, the message can be more poetic and for the bank’s history theme, the message can be regarding the different attribute or achievements of the bank.

Images with Quality and Quantity

When designing a calendar, images are of second-most important aspect to be considered (the first most important aspect is the theme). After the concept and message of the calendar is decided, you start searching the right images that blend with the theme and the message. Although it is quite a hectic activity to go step by step and look for best suited images for the messages, however, this hard work reaps you good at the end.

Some design houses or advertising agencies have their own images banks from where they find good images for the design. However, in most cases, either you undergo customized photography or rely on the images available from the internet. Whatever the medium is, you need to make sure that there are enough design, photography or illustration resources for all the pages of calendar and these images should be high-quality and printable according to the size of the calendar.

Make Best Use of the Page Space

As I have mentioned quite a lot of time earlier in this post, that a calendar is not just a page with dates and images, it is more of an opportunity to spread your message out throughout the year. So either you are designing a wall calendar or a table calendar (or even a pocket-size calendar), the message you want to convey should be proper and perfect. Also, there are times when designers find very little space for everything they want to put in a calendar and other times, it happens that designers get a large page space to display all the elements of the calendar.

Here, only the wisest of all designers would know how to compose everything in a way that it makes the best use of the page space, without losing viewer’s interest. Also, put an introductory page at the beginning or end of the calendar describing the business, its attributes and achievements. Take the page space as calendar’s real estate and make best use of it all.

Make the Calendar Your Portfolio

Either you are making your own business’s calendar or designing one for one of your clients, as a designer it is an opportunity for you to make it a call-to-action portfolio. Want to know how? Let me tell you the secret.

If you are making a calendar for your own business or your own brand, turn it into an opportunity to display some of the best works you did in the previous year and display the work one-by-one on each page. Write details about the work (date, company, design rational and its outcome etc.) in the body copy and get it printed well. Then send it to your friends, clients and acquaintances and see the boost in your work gain.

Likewise, if you are designing a calendar for your client, highlight their product or services and the message they want to convey through the calendar in the best way possible. Outsource if you want to, but take it seriously and add the best creative juices into its designing as much as possible. Reason being, when your client will give out this calendar t their contacts and others, it will stay with a number of people all year long and if it will be well designed, people will automatically want the maker of the calendar to work for them as well.

The Date Display

A calendar has its most important part in the date section (basically, that’s what it is for). The pattern and designing of date display should be legible, pleasant and attractive. Although it depends a lot on the size of the calendar, however, you should try to keep the target market in mind and make it as comfortable as possible. I mean seriously, people should not be looking for September the 30th throughout the calendar! Here again, you can make use of the dates to promote your company or business through the dates.

For example, inform the viewers of your company’s scheduled events or promotions in your calendar dates. You can also customize the dates so they specify when events or sales will take place, or print suggestions on your calendars like, ‘visit our website’ or ‘Buy a gift for a loved one’ on holidays like Christmas or Valentine’s Day etc.

Be Keen About the Production Details

After designing the calendar, the most crucial part of the process is the printing and production of the material. Sit with your printer and think about the production techniques that will:

1. Work best with your calendar’s theme or message
2. Make the calendar easy for recipients to use.

Also, research upon how matte paper would go for your calendar design or a glossy one, and different trim sizes will look with your design. Printers also offer different types of binding, such as traditional saddle-stitched or stapled bindings and wire-o or spiral bindings. A spiral binding allows users to hang the calendar on a wall, as does a stapled binding plus a small hole for a thumbtack.

However, the question that arises is that, is this a correct approach towards promoting a business or merely a sequel of the quest for a unique logo design? After all, a logo is the main identity for business and should be retain their logos to be uniform throughout the period of their existence.

The redesigned logo should be different from industry competitors. For inspiration, take a look at any number of business cards or printed brochures. They usually have logos on them and you can see what styles other companies are using.

Logo Redesigning – To Be or Not To Be?

Marketing practitioners say that logos are considered symbolic to the business or name of a particular entity. A logo design that remains un-changed retains a standing in the market. People recognize it well and can easily relate to them. On the other hand, world trends change with the passage of time and the way to adjust yourself with the world is to go with the flow.

When the market saw major changes in consumer trends around the globe, there blew a wave change in logo design of the companies. Nowadays, brands worldwide are adapting to this wave of changing behaviors and logo redesigning is now top agenda for entrepreneurs and business owners.

The reason for redesigning logo is variant depending upon the particular business’s requirements. Normally it happens that when companies go through overall re-branding, logo redesigning becomes a part of it. So for the sake of betterment of my fellow designers, when redesigning your client’s logo, do consider the following points:

Stick to the Roots

You should be very careful while redesigning the logo of your client’s company. Remember that redesigning does not mean that you change ‘all’ the elements of the logo. It is important for you to research that which element of the logo needs a change; either it is the color or the icon that is harming the company. Once you have decided upon the to-be-changed element, only then proceed with the process.

Involve the Client

Sometimes designers make the biggest mistake during the process of logo redesigning i.e. they don’t involve the client and do it individually. Such a behavior results in instant refusal, multiple design revisions or sometimes job withdrawal (unless you make something out-of-this-world).

So always keep the client involved in the logo redesigning process at every single step. You should ask them what the main purpose behind the logo redesign and discrepancies in the existing logo, and then do your best to match their expectations.

Keep it Uncomplicated

A logo should be simple and uncomplicated; no matter it is the designing or redesigning process. Some designers are of the view that changing a logo’s design means to make it more complex and elaborated. For all those who are of such views, please remember that adding small and frequently annoying extra details to the already existing logo will not make it look more professional. Infact, if the existing logo is too complicated, strive to un-complicate in the redesign.

Retain some Familiarity

There are cases of some wise logo redesigning done in the market, without anyone ever knowing about it. Such a subtle logo redesigning has been achieved because some elements of the older logo are left un-touched and so the new logo makes its space in consumers mind real easy. So if you want your client and their target market to make an easier transaction to the new logo, simply chose to modernize the logo without changing the basic theme.

Maintain the Scalability

Either you are going through initial designing of the logo or doing its redesigning, it is crucial to keep it scalable. Your redesigned logo should be used across different mediums, no matter how big or small they may be. Also, from the color’s point-of view, it needs to be usable in grayscale or any other color from the palette.

Make it Genuine

A genuine logo is what people want and look for. Your client’s existing logo may be originally appealing but as soon as you get it redesigned, it loses human interest. This may be because when you redesigned the logo, you did not retain its genuineness. Basically, companies undertake a logo redesign because they want a new emotion to be portrayed when the logo is looked at. So try to change the “look and feel” of the redesigned logo simultaneously.

Modernity Not So Necessary

A logo redesign calls for a fresher look, and most companies go for a logo redesign owing to the outdated look of their logo. However, it is not necessary to always take a modern approach in logo redesigning. There are both modern and classic logos in the market and there are examples of both types that have made their mark. So logo redesigning should be done with a rationale and justified approach.  Although the reason behind the needed redesign may be that the logo is outdated, people want a fresh outlook and take on their logo so it shines through the clutter.

Don’t Mess with the Color

One of the most important elements of the existing logo you should seriously consider retaining is the color. Color is the instant visual identification of your logo. The people, who are not able to read the text or recognize the icon, remember only the color of the logo. So try as hard as possible to redesign the new logo of your client’s company with the same color as the older logo. Even if you do need to (or are required to) change the color of the new logo, try to choose any other ‘recognizable’ color of the company so that it does not loses its general appeal.

Try Different Approaches

Being extra cautious during the log redesigning process requires you to design out many different options with a variety of approaches. Design some options keeping closer to the existing logo with only minor changes. Also try out something entirely different and changed altogether. The more variety you will give to your client the easier it will be for you to float through the redesigning process.

To Reason Out

It is totally understandable that a lot of insight and time goes into designing a perfect logo for a company, but sometimes the need to change it arises. There may be many reasons for log redesigning that prompt your client to undergo a logo redesigning process. For instance there are times when a particular product or brand reaches the saturation level and ceases to give the desired results. In such cases logo redesigning seems a good help.

Also, at times companies undergo merger, so their websites need to have a new logo for them. However, no matter what the reason or need your client feels for a logo redesigning, it is important to take a well-researched approach towards this process. Minor mistakes can lead you and your client to a dead-end. So be astute and ask the client to help you throughout the process.

Step 1: Background

Open Photoshop. Create new file (File > New) with size 1280×1024 px, resolution 72 dpi, Mode: RGB.

Step 2

Activate gradient tool. Click preview box in option bar to open gradient editor dialog. Create gradient from #ffbc58 to #f95b1e.

Step 4

Create radial gradient from center to outside.

Step 5

Download vintage grunge textures and paste it on top of the image. Resize it until we find nice texturing.

Step 6

Change texture blend mode to Multiply with 20% opacity.

Step 7: Main Text

Add text on top of the image. Here, I use yellow color.

Step 8

Add this layer styles.

Step 9: Floral Shapes

Download Vector Floral Ornaments and open it in Illustrator. Select one of the vector shape. Hit ctrl+C to copy it to clipboard.

Step 10

Back to Photoshop. Hit ctrl+V for paste. Make sure you choose Smart Object. This way, pasted object will remain an illustrator file, so you’ll be able to resize it without degrading its quality. Rotate and resize the vector shape until you find it interesting.

Step 11

Now, we need to change its color to math overall color tone. From the Layers panel double click its layer thumbnail. You’ll probably get a dialog box like seen below, just click OK.

Step 12

The Shape wil be opened in Illustrator. Select it and change its color from Color Panel. After you finish edit the color hit ctrl+S to save it and ctrl+W to close it. Let’s go back to Photoshop and you’ll find the shape is also changing.

Step 13

Hold alt and move cursor on line between shape and text layers. The cursor will change into two overlapping center, click now to convert shape into clipping mask. The vector shape will goes inside the text.

Step 14

Repeat the process for other vector shape. Once you’re done, select the shape layers and the text then hit ctrl+G to put them into separate group. Name the group text.

Step 15: Add Subtle Floral Image in Background

Hold shift then click on thumbnail layer of shapes we have created earlier. This step will create selection based on the shape’s size.

Step 16

Create new layer underneath the text. Click Edit > Fill, use White then click OK.

Step 17

Remove selection by pressing ctrl+D. Click Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.

Step 18

Change layers opacity to 20%.

Step 19: Decorating Text

Back to Illustrator, open Vector Flourish Design and hit ctrl+A to select all shapes. From color panel change its fill color to white.

Step 20

All the shapes’s color is now white. Because the background is also white its very hard to see them. Click View > Preview to see shapes outline.

Step 21

Shape one of the shape. Press ctrl+C.

Step 22

Return to Photoshop, hit ctrl+V to paste the shape. Place it on top of the text. Add layer styles Drop Shadow.

Step 23

Repeat this process with other shapes.

Step 24: Add Depth to Text Decoration

Select all shapes and press ctrl+G to put them in one group. Duplicate the group by dragging it to New Layer icon.

Step 25

Hit ctrl+E to convert duplicated group into a layer. Double click layer to open layer styles dialog box. Select Layer Mask Hides Effect and add bigger drop shadow.

Step 26

Select text by ctrl+clicking its layer thumbnail. Hit ctrl+shift+I to invert selection. Make sure the floral layer is still selected and click Add Layer Mask icon. Change fill layer to 0%.

Step 27

Now, floral shape out side the text will have bigger and darker shadow. This gives impression as if they are higher from the background.

Step 28: Adding Real Flower

Open Yellow Flower in Photoshop. Use Quick Selection to select the flower. It’s very amazing how this tool works! All you need is just dragging inside the flower and they will automatically selected.

If you use earlier version of Photoshop, you may not have this tool. Use the magic wand to get similar result.

Step 29

Click Select > Modify > Contract. Use 2 pixel then click OK.

Step 30

Copy flower and paste it on our image. Right click flower layer and choose Convert to Smart Object. By changing the flower layerto smart object we will retain all its pixel information.

Step 31

Hit ctrl+T and change flower’s size.

Step 32

Add drop shadow to give the flower realistic look.

Step 33

Hold alt and drag flower to duplicate it. Again change its size.

Step 34

Open another flower, select it, and paste it in Photoshop.

Step 35: Add Dry Leaves

Download Autumn Leaves 1 and open it in Photoshop. This file is already cutted. All we need to do is just make rough selection around it, cpy, and paste it in Photoshop.

Resize and put it on the text.

Step 37

Keep doing this to another dry leaves.

Step 38: Adding Butterflies

Open Butterfly in Photoshop. All the butterfly has already cutted. Just like we did with earlier dry leaves, select and paste them on Photoshop. Don’t forget to add drop shadow.

Step 39: Add Subtle Floral Shape in Background

Paste floral ornament we have opened earlier. Put it behind the text.

Change fill layer to 0%. Add Bevel and Emboss.

Step 41

Add another floral ornament on the background. Don’t overdo this, keep them subtle. Otherwise the design will be too crowded and remove the focus from main text.

Step 42

I feel that there’s too much empty space in this design. To remove it we’l use crop tool. Open crop tool and drag around the text. I’m using Photoshop CS5 here and you can see that the crop box is divided into 9 grids that help us see the final image proportion. Once you have find the right size hit ctrl+Enter to start cropping.

1. First of all download an image which you may use in brochure design (you can use your own photo for design).

2.  we are using an Arista font for title of our brochure.

3. Open a new document in Adobe Photoshop with dimensions 1100×600. (CMYK colors)  If you intend this to be a large brochure as you have requirements.

4. after create new document we just set rulers on our required area (550px width each) as we drawn in below image.

5. On the new layer and using a Gradient Tool (Keyboard key: G) set to Linear Gradient, create a gradient from colors #00aeff to #353433.

6. Let us now create an circles. Using the Ellipse Tool (Keyboard key: U), create a circle with color fill #ffffff. Make sure the Shape Layers option is activated. Draw the circle somewhere below the bottom half of the backpage document.

7. Now repeat Step 6 three more times and draw the inner circles. For the colors I have used # f47721, # 97ca49 and # 010000. We should now have something like this.

8. Merge all the 4 circles together in one layer, Duplicate this layer 3 times, arrange and resize the circles so we would have different placements and varied sizes.

9. Beneath all our circles layers, let us now draw our vertical lines. Using the Rectangular Tool (U), draw vertical lines from the top of the document and bottom of the document to where our circles placed. Use the same colors as we did with the repeated circles.

10. On right bottom all our circles layers, let us now draw our horizontal lines. Using the Rectangular Tool (Keyboard key: U), draw horizontal lines from the left of the document right of the document to where our circles placed. Use the same colors as we did with the repeated circles.

11. now add logo as we writing there text based logo using font name Arista.

12. in this step we just put our brochure given informative data on back page with heading where we using “Myriad Pro” font even in description text.

13. we’re focusing on an importent part of this creative designed brochure “contact” area which is highlighted area.

14. in this last step we just finalize our very professional brochure with an water mark style image where already placed some other brochure images in perspective view which make 100 time more professional environment, we just get this image from Link. just remove unnecessory things from this image and transform (CTRL + T) after select this image on banner area (both pages) and drop after set on background and redure opacity 10%, as we shown in below image.
