What Is Joomla?

When blogging is being discussed, Joomla is frequently mentioned as one of the best blogging platforms. This is so because there is no doubt that Joomla is one of the best CMS (Content Management System). Joomla can be used not only as a blogging platform but you can also run an ordinary site on it, a shopping cart or even a media gallery (though there are other applications for the last two purposes and they are better than Joomla).

Joomla is a free, open source application. It is written in PHP and it works with MySQL database server. The public view for the default installation for Joomla 1.5 (the latest stable version) is shown in the screenshot below.

Joomla is frequently compared to WordPress (another leading CMS). It is true that both Joomla and WordPress are really outstanding pieces of software and you can’t say if Joomla is better than WordPress or vice versa. Anyway, both Joomla and WordPress are great and they are light years ahead of the majority of the other CMS, so no matter which one you pick, you won’t regret it.

The Advantages of Joomla

Joomla is popular for a reason – it has so many advantages. Some of them are:

• Free. Joomla is free for both commercial and personal use.

• Powerful. The standard Joomla installation offers many features and when you add the plugins to that, basically you have everything you would want from a CMS.

• Many templates and extensions. There is a rich selection of templates and extensions, most of which are also free, so you can customize your Joomla site in almost any aspect.

• A great community. A great community is a real asset because when you are stuck with a problem and you need help, there are Joomla forums where you can post and get competent answers.

The Disadvantages of Joomla

In comparison to the numerous advantages of Joomla, its disadvantages are neither that many, nor that serious. One of them is that Joomla is relatively difficult for a beginner. The admin interface (shown in the next screenshot) is pretty neat but it is the shear amount of options in it that makes a bit longer to master.

Another disadvantage of Joomla (and of any other software, which is not custom-made) is that if you require major customizations, you can’t do this, if you don’t have solid programming/design skills (or if you don’t hire somebody else, who has them). On the other hand, when there are so many free templates and extensions, it is quite possible that you will never need to make any serious customizations, so this is hardly a serious issue.

How to Select a Joomla Host

When you plan to run your site or blog on Joomla, one important consideration is about where you will host your site. If you are looking for Joomla hosting, it is not difficult to find offers – almost any best web host offers Joomla hosting. Actually, if a host offers PHP and MySQL, this means that most likely you will be able to host your Joomla site with them.

There are also some web hosting companies, which specialize in Joomla hosting. You might want to look for such specialized Joomla hosting companies. The offers for Joomla hosting are not more expensive than a standard web hosting offer but even if it is a few cents more a month, it is still worth, provided that the company is a best web host.

You also have the alternative to host your Joomla site for free. Free Joomla hosting offers are not that abundant but actually they aren’t recommendable either. Webhosting is getting cheaper and cheaper, so even if your budget is really tight, usually it is best to avoid such types of web hosting offers. Step 1

Open Illustrator and set up a new document 750 by 1000 pixels.

Step 2

Press (E) to select the Ellipse Tool and draw a circle for the head, make it a little flattened.

Use Pen Tool (P) to draw the beak path.

Select both path and press the Unite button in the Pathfinder palette to unite this two path into one.

Select Pen Tool again and try to draw a path as you see in the image below for the second beak path.

Select the head path and press Ctrl + C and Ctrl + F to create a copy of it. Select the copy and the newly created beak path by shift clicking on them and press the Intersect button in the Pathfinder palette.

Step 3

Draw the body using the Pen Tool (P). This step may take a few tries, till you get the needed result.

Select the head path and the body path and press Unite button in the pathfinder palette.

Now it’s time to decorate our penguin. Draw a path a path that intersect him just where he should be black.

Make a copy of the main body path, select it and this new path and press Intersect button in the Pathfinder palette.

Step 4

Use Pen Tool again to draw the  left flipper first.

And then draw the right one.

Step 5

Draw a small tail path and press Ctrl + Shift + [ to send it back.

To swim and walk penguin needs feet. Let’s draw them.

Also repeat the sending back process on every foot. Draw the second one.

Step 6

We’ve made it to the most interesting part – adding color! Select the part of the body that should be black, make it no stroke and apply a vertical gradient from 80% gray to #0A1526 (or any other dark blue).

Select the beak path and also fill it with a gradient (horizontal this time) from a dark orange (#F15A29) to and usual orange (#F7941E).

Select the main body path and apply a vertical gradient again from #FBB040 to white, set the Location to 26%. Leave the stroke for now.

Select both flippers and fill them with the same gradient as the black part of the body and also no stroke.

Fill the feet with the same gradient as the beak.

Select the tail path and apply the same setting for it as for the black body part by clicking on it using Eyedropper Tool (I) but adjust the position of the gradient.

Step 7

Press E to select the Ellipse Tool and draw a small circle on the head. Set the 90% gray as the fill color and give it a 1pt, 20%gray stroke.

With Ellipse Tool still selected draw a small highlight on the eye.

Step 8

Rename “Layer 1” to “Penguin”. Create a new layer under it and name it “Background”.
Scale down the penguin, make a copy of him, reflect it and scale down again. Place the second penguin behind the first one.

Make sure you have “Background layer selected, take the Pen Tool and draw a random surface under the penguins, fill it with #E1FBFF.

Now draw the sides on the iceberg. Fill them with gradient from #AAB9BF to # BFCED4 .

Change the position of the gradient every time you make a new side to add some contrast.

Draw a shadow under the penguins and set the #BFCED4 as the fill color.

With the newly create shadow selected go to Effect > Blur > Gaussian Blur and set the Radius to 7px. Hit ok.

Create a rectangle using Rectangle Tool (M) and place it under the iceberg sub layers. Fill it with #7DA3AA.

Add some detail to the water.

Step 9

Draw another rectangle for the sky and fill it with gradient from #E3F4FA to white.

Draw a circle (the sun) and fill it with FFFAEF.

Select the sun path and Go to Effect > Stylize > Scribble and enter these settings:

Then Go to Effect > Stylize > Outer Glow and enter these settings:

Draw some water drops on the iceberg.

Final Image Preview

Step 1

Will start from creating a number of objects for our pattern, and those will be :

1. A heart balloon
2. A pair of lips
3. An arrow in the heart
4. A Cupid
5. A box of candies
6. Nr “14” (as a date)

Open Illustrator and create a new document, 800×800px. Rename “Layer 1” to “Background”. Select the Rectangle Tool (M) and draw a 800 by 800 pixels square for the background. Fill it with #F0537F and lock this layer.

Since we are creating a two-colored pattern you may save #F0537F to your swatches, this will be our fill color for all objects. For the stroke will be using white.
Create a new layer and name it “Objects”.  Double click on your “Objects” layer in the Layer Palette to open up the Layer Options dialogue. Set the black color for paths to make them more visible on our fill color.

Step 2

We’ve finished all prep stuff so we can start drawing our objects. We’ll start by drawing the hear balloon. Make sure that you have selected the “Objects” layer, select the Pen Tool (P) and draw simple hear path with rounded edges and filled with color.

Press C to select the Scissors Tool and delete the bottom part of the heart.

Using Ellipse Tool (L) draw a small ellipse under the heart and then press Ctrl  + [ to this sub layer under the hear shape sub layer.

Select the Pen Tool (P) again a draw a rope under balloon. Press Ctrl + Shift + [ to move it under the ellipse path.

With Pen Tool still selected draw a small highlight on the balloon, make it no stroke and fill with white.

Select all balloon paths and group them by pressing Ctrl + G.

Step 3

Select the Pen Tool and try to draw the bottom lip.

And then the top lip. This may take a couple of tries until you get the perfect result.
Draw some lines between lips to add some details to them.

Just like we did with balloon, draw two highlights on the top lip.

Group the lips paths.

Step 4

Now it’s for the heart pierced by a Cupid arrow of love. Draw or import from somewhere a heart shape.

I’ve made the right side of the heart a little bigger and then rotated it a bit. Use Line Segment Tool (\) to draw two parts of the arrow.

Now draw the feathers and the arrowhead.

Don’t forget the highlight.

Group all this paths together.

Step 5

Now we will be drawing a Cupid, the true symbol of the Saint Valentine’s Day. Select the Rounded Rectangle Tool and draw a rectangle. You can adjust the angle radius using arrow key on your keyboard.

Cupids have curly hair, so, select the Ellipse Tool and while holding down the Shift key Draw many circles on the top of the rectangle.

With Ellipse Tool Still selected draw the Cupid’s eye.

Select the Pen Tool and try to draw a bow. Don’t fill this path with color.

Now draw an arrow.

Using Ellipse Tool again draw Cupid’s hands.

Create a wing near Cupid’s back.

Last thing Cupid needs is legs and then you can group him.

Step 6

We’ll be drawing a candy box now. Start again by drawing a heart.

Select it; press Ctrl + C and then Ctrl + F to make a copy of it. Move the selected copy up by about 30 pixels, depending on your illustration size.

Use Line Segment Tool to create two lines that will connect these two hearts.

Delete a piece of the lower hear to make them look like a box together.

Draw two lines with no fill across the box.

Draw a line connecting those two hears at their bottoms.

Group the candy box.

Step 7

Last thing on our list is the date. It’s much easier with that. Select the Type Tool (T) and type “14”.

Now type “th” somewhere near.

Underline it and group all text.

Step 8

We’ve made it to the most important part of the tutorial – creating the patter itself.  Create a big square in the center of the document.

Now try to fit in this square as many objects as you can. Copy them, reflect them, transform and scale them. This will be you future patter model. This is the most difficult part of the tutorial because you have to do it by yourself.

When the overall result is ready start filling in small gaps with scaled down copies of the same objects. Pay attention to the borders, if there is any object very close to a border; put the objects on the opposite side not so close to it to create differences. You will see your mistakes after you apply this pattern to a bigger path.

Select the square that we made and make it no stroke. Press Ctrl + A to select everything and then go to Edit > Define Pattern. Give it a name and hit Enter. Now select a bigger path that you want to apply this pattern to and select it from the Swatches Palette.
