Since print marketing plays a very important role in company’s success, print designing should be given the utmost importance.

While printing a design for your client’s company or your product, you need to keep in mind that print designing will help you in advertising their product and your reputation. So, it should be visually stunning and appealing to the onlookers. Obviously, you cannot satisfy everyone with the print so print your design in a way so that it is appealing for at least your client and its target audience and it should deliver the message as well. Remember, your print design will be a hit only if people will able to relate to it.

These methods will help you design printed color brochures, event flyers, and promotional posters.

The Tips

A print designer is more than just a graphic designer. Print designing requires a separate skills set and an astute mind. There are certain tips that you will have to keep in mind while print designing so that you can get on your way towards a better print design. Following these tips in general, you can apply these tips next time you design a print material:

Focus on Bleeds

If you are into print designing, you obviously know that print designs are printed on large sheets and later on the cutting is done according to the print. We all will agree that while cutting, many problems can occur and the biggest one is that cutting is never exact due to which the edges of your design may suffer. In print designing, color and images are quite close and if not close they are blended in a way that cutting them can be the most difficult thing.

If you facing an issue like this, you should extend the size of your canvas past the actual print size so images and colors extend past the actual size. In this way, when you will trim down the print to actual size, the edges won’t suffer. Also, make sure that you do not end up confusing yourself with the size of your bleed canvas and your actual print size.

Setting up a Grid

Very few people can actually differentiate between web designing and print designing. In web designing wire-frames are used in order to mock up the websites. In print designing grids are used by print graphic designers. There is not much of a difference however, grids are more organized and refined for designing during they lay out of images, texts and other relevant material.
Grids are commonly used for magazines, newspapers or other projects in which a lot of paper work is involved.

Grids are also very useful to design brochures, flyers and business cards. If your print designs look consistent it will obviously put a good impression of yours. You can use grids in many ways if you have a good knowledge of them so in order to improve your print designing you can learn more about grids as well.

Keep Receivers in Mind

Obviously, different kind of users will be viewing or holding your print designs so always design something while keeping user’s mind in perspective. You can visualize it with a mind frame of a user and then make the necessary changes if required.  Various things should be kept in mind while designing a print. You need to make sure that all the text on your design is easily readable by the audience. The whole design should be easy to hold. Also, make sure that the design looks good under different kind of light sources.

One thing which is very important is the placement of the design. You must be aware of the location of its placement while creating a design so that you can visualize what look it will give when it is placed at a specification location. Print designing can be placed or used anywhere so you need to consider all possibilities and always keep your audience in mind so that you can create something which is pleasing to their eye because this is all that matters.

Do not add “Too Much”

Since the space is quite less in print designing you have to be extremely creative because the allowed space is less and you have to convey a lot. Obviously, delivering your message in such a small space is difficult however, if you are able to do that, you can call yourself a great designer. Just because you have deliver a lot in small space does not mean that you should make the design way too crowded and complex for people to understand. Always keep in mind that too much of information in one go can be a huge turn off.

Once you have printed the design, you can always review it and make sure you cut out everything that looks extra. Instead of giving a lot of information you can always mention a website at the end of the design where users can get a lot if information.

Companies or different products always have a tag line. While printing a design for a product or company, if you client wants to highlight a certain point or a tag-line, invert it. White on black is one example and it always looks great. Print designing gives you millions of way to exhibit your creativity as you have to do more in less which can be very difficult.

Be very selective with the kind of material you use. It is your right to have a quality material so be demanding and do not compromise on quality of the material. If you are using photographs, the resolution should be perfect and clear of the picture as bad picture quality will over shadow all your efforts and good work. Tell your clients that if they really want something good for their product, they will have to invest in it.

Long Lasting Impression

The first impression is obviously very important however, you also have to focus on long lasting impression. People should talk about your design, they should find it attractive and the design should take the product to another level. Creating an impression is always difficult so you need to come up with a design that talks for itself.

Clarify the Objectives

Your print design should clarify the objectives of the product. Do not love your design in fact be critical about it. Take a look at your design again and again and make sure it is delivering the message perfectly to the audience. If you have managed to deliver your message is such a small space, you have successfully created a perfect design.

Double check everything. Once you are done with completing a design, take a break. When your break is over, come back and look at your designs again and see if anything needs amendment. Check, spellings, alignments, color scheme and make sure nothing looks odd.

The Bottom Line

Going through the design is very important because if something is misprinted, you will have to work on getting things printed all over again (which causes a lot of effort and money to be spent). Check the design yourself and then show it to somebody who was not involved in designing process and ask them if they can find any mistakes. You can always send the design for print when it is checked and approved.

Happy Print Designing!
